it is mentioned here that sometimes devices get signals from multiple paths and they try to decode them. does a cantenna which is a metal can that has only one side left open reduce the number of paths a device receive signals or does it work in a different manner?

imho, not, for mountaineous regions where there is no direct sight of the BTS i always recommend panel antennas, the reflecting structure can always change...wich results in often retuning the antenna...and in winter it is not the best thing to do.
