firmware update procedure
- Download and extract the update package
- Connect to the router using a LAN cable (one was supplied in the box when you purchased it)
- Login to the router and make notes of any existing settings you wish to retain (MAC filter list, WIFI password etc).
- Factory reset the router: Advanced Settings | System | Restore Defaults | Click Restore
- Let it reboot, then power it down and remove the SIM
- Assign yourself a fixed IP for your LAN connection in the same range as the default one. (i.e. 192.168.1.20)
- In the folder you extracted review the B970 Upgrade User Guide.pdf
- Run: FmcUpdate.exe
- Click Check. Your router should be detected and it will list the current firmware and the target firmware. If your router is not detected you probably did not factory reset it.
- Click Update.
- The update process will start. It takes about 20min to complete.
- If at any point the update fails to update a certain component take careful note of what did update and then remove those files from the extracted folder and repeat the update steps. The update will detect that the files are missing and skip over updating them. This should allow for the rest of the update to resume.
- Sigh with relief if everything went well
Run the B970(b) on a normal USB port or power bank
-> Please make sure to read the BE CAREFUL!-Text before you start
Originally the description and manual of the unit says, that you can't run it on battery power, which is basically true because it has none. But it also doesn't boot up if you connect to a USB power bank or your normal USB port on your computer using a USB type B cable. The only thing you will recognize happening is that the "Mode" and "Signal" LED will start to flash, but "WLAN" and "Power" will stay off.
But there is a simple solution for this problem:
1. Grab a normal USB type B cable as it's supplied with e.g. printers or external HDDs.
2. Carefully remove the plastic isolation and the aluminium shielding on a length of about 5cm (2 inches), make sure to not damage the wires.
3. Cut the green and the white wire (data wires), be carefully not to damage the red and black one or you won't have anything lighting up.
4. Strip both the green and white wire on the side that goes to the Router
5. Solder or hot glue (if you have no soldering iron) them together. If you want use hot glue, make sure to twist them together really tight and wait until the glue is cold, or the connection won't last long
6. Use some electrical tape to close everything up
7. Finished! Now you can run your Huawei B970(b) on a USB power bank, USB car adaptor, USB wall adaptor, USB solar charger or whatever. Just make sure that your USB source puts out at least 1000mA. The router will boot up and run fine on 500mA but will ask for a higher current as soon as more clients connect or it needs to run GSM on full power in e.g. a remote location.
BE CAREFUL!
hot glue guns and soldering irons are very hot and can cause burnings and fires! So always keep an eye on them and don't leave the room with any of them turned on.
Keep an eye on your USB adapters! USB adaptors, often even expensive ones, don't have a current limiter and will get hot when used above specs, what will most likely be the case when using a 500mA one.
If you can, use a USB adaptor that is able to put out 1500-2000mA (like the supplied one is), 1000mA will be alright too, if you only plan to connect a couple WLAN clients.
